Phoenix

Phoenix Team Profile

Phoenix were founded in 2007 and are original members of the Beijing Cricket Club league competition.  With a wide range of players from many different countries, Phoenix enjoy playing the game with a friendly and competitive spirit.

Phoenix have reached the BCC league final for the last three years, falling at the last hurdle for the first two of those, but finally winning the League Trophy at the third attempt in 2009.  They have also shown good performances at previous editions of the Beijing Sixes, being Cup runners-up in 2008 and Plate winners in 2009.

Led by captain Surendra Chaminda, Phoenix are looking forward to an extremely enjoyable weekend, and will be trying their hardest to reduce the extraordinary number of wides they've been bowling during this season to date!

Team Bios

Surendra Chaminda
Captain of Phoenix since 2008, Surendra is from Galle in Sri Lanka.  A talented all-rounder with good pace bowling at the death and a wide range of batting shots, Surendra has being playing for Phoenix since the team was founded in 2007.

Martin Wareham
Vice-captain of Phoenix since 2008, Martin is from England and has a busy job behind the stumps keeping wicket, although his batting is normally calm and cautious and not entirely suited to Sixes play.  Martin has played for Phoenix since the team was founded in 2007

Tarun Varma
Probably the most aggressive batsman in Beijing, Tarun might be a good bet for the biggest six in the tournament.  Originally from India, Tarun picked up the batsman of the tournament award at the 2008 Shanghai Sixes and can bowl some handy deliveries too. Tarun has being playing for Phoenix since 2008.

Kashif Mohammed
One of the best shot makers in the Phoenix team, Kashif is from Pakistan and he is a talented batsman. In Sixes he’ll probably be unable to control his urge to slog every ball that comes his way. Kashif has being playing for Phoenix since 2009.

Yasir Shabbir
An orthodox batsman with good technique, Yasir is from Pakistan.  A promising all-rounder who also has experience opening the batting and decent bowling the middle overs, Yasir has being playing for Phoenix since 2009.

Usman Jr.
Usman Jr. normally opens the bowling and he has troubled plenty of batsmen with his unorthodox bowling angles.  He is composed enough to bat anywhere, though he is discovering that the lower-order suits him nicely.  Usman Jr. is from Pakistan and has being playing for Phoenix since 2007.

Nasir Rafiq
A promising all-rounder, Nasir has been one of the team’s best bowlers this season and has made an immediate impression with his quick and accurate bowling.  Nasir is also a talented batsman who can adapt to any difficult situation in an innings.  Nasir is from Pakistan and has joined Phoenix in 2010.

Ali Shahid
Ali is an off spinner who first played for Phoenix in 2008.  Despite moving away from Beijing he has returned for occasional matches and especially likes making an impact in the Sixes.  Ali is from Pakistan and his aggressive batting is well suited to this format.
